[edit] Origin
The Short 360 is a 36 seat derivative of the 30 seat Short 330. In high density configuration 39 could be seated. The 3 foot (91 centimeter) stretch reduced drag in addition to adding capacity and employed a wider wingspan. The development was announced in 1980, prototype first flight on 1 June 1981, type certification was awarded on 3 September 1981 and entered service with Suburban Airlines (later merged with Allegheny Airlines/US Airways) in November 1981.
[edit] Variants
- The basic 360 has two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A65R turboprop engines providing 1327 shaft horsepower (990 kilowatts) to five blade propellers.
- The 360-100 was the first production model.
- The 360 Advanced (from 1985) introduced upgraded PT6A67R engines providing giving 1424 shaft horsepower (1062 kilowatts). The aircraft was later redesignated 360-200.
- The 360-300 retained the Advanced's engines but matched them to six blade propellers offering higher cruise speed and performance. The 360-300F was a freighter configured variant with capacity for five LD3 cargo containers.
- The C-23 Sherpa B, B+ and C variants are military configured Short 360s operated by the United States Air National Guard, which have seen service in Iraq.[1]
[edit] Production
Production ceased in 1991 after 165 deliveries. A total of 11 hull losses have been recorded (with one more probable in the wake of the recent Air Cargo Carriers incident [2]).
