Shompen

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Shompen are one of the indigenous peoples of the Nicobar Islands, part of the Indian union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Current population is estimated at approximately 400 members and located on Great Nicobar island. They practice a hunter-gatherer subsistence economy. Six members were reported to have died in the Great Sumatran Earthquake and tsunami disaster of December 26, 2004.

They are the only primitive tribe of Mongoloid stock living in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.[citation needed]
