[edit] Jupiter

No problem! Beauty of the system, eh? I always find it interesting to see how much there is to fix after I add something, lots of sharp eyes out there. Stan 19:26, 9 Nov 2004 (UTC)

== Hi! I'm sure you know that there is a deletion process. If you want to keep an article, feel free to vote for it, but don't removed it, that is abuse of process. Thanks, Trollminator 22:22, 24 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] "Deep Web" research

"I've run queries past the Dictionary of National Bibliography via ATHENS before, for example, part of the hidden "deep web", and seen people cite Lexis searches or Dialog."

Can you enlighten me on this? Ihavenolife 05:42, 11 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] VfD 'this land lyrics'

Are you going to change your vote on Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/This_land_lyrics due to your comment? As of right now you've voted keep twice on something it looks like you don't support keeping. Thanks! hfool/Wazzup? 02:45, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Looks like there was a vandal on the page, see User_talk:Humblefool#This_Land_VfD. Sorry to bother you. hfool/Wazzup? 17:29, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] morgenthau

Your version of the "controversy" section is fine with me. I was just making some small changes in the wording of what was there before, but I think that your rewrite is an improvement. The point that he never left Istanbul is not very significant, because I think that his report was known to be an amalgamation of reports from many people who worked under him. Best regards, Morris 03:24, Jan 12, 2005 (UTC)

Dear, Shimgray, in the future if you see an entry in the timeline of inventions with whose date you disagree, please fix it rather than deleting the entry.

[edit] The Poseidon Adventure

Shimgray, thanks for your response given on the Reference desk. I've copied over the responses to Talk:The Poseidon Adventure. If you are able to find the notes you made, can you please update the page with that. Jay 09:40, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Argh

Sorry to bother you at home, as it were, but while I was asking another how-to-merge question at the help desk, someone posted and made the page too big, so I was told I'd have to merge my post with something else. Ha. Ha. I don't know how to merge! That was my question! I managed to get "Heath toffee" redirected and renamed "Heath bar", but "Heath (candy bar)" refuses to join "Heath bar" by moving, so obviously I've missed a crucial part of the move/merge operation. And then... Help! Before I do anything stupid. --Mothperson 22:42, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] You did it! You did it! You did it!

I was considering how much easier it would be if I just cut and pasted, but I was nervous newbie, and thought if I were caught I'd have to go to Wikijail, which I know they have somewhere around here. Thank you very very much. And thank you, too, for any and all link clean-up at LOFNAP. -- Mothperson 23:39, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Grand Reopening

I am completely cross-eyed from googling, but the new Heath bar page is up, and since you made it possible (no good deed goes unpunished!), I am wondering if you'd take a look at it, and spot any egregious errors. I don't understand why my Ben & Jerry's is red, because the exact same thing is blue on LOFNAP. I think perhaps I need to read up more on linking. Thanks. --Mothperson 20:39, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thank you again, I really couldn't see that stuff. But I'm still wondering why my Ben & Jerry's isn't blue. But great - it's blue here! That's a big help. Not. The mysteries of Wiki. Also, when I deleted the note about the article being a stub, it disappeared from the list of stubs, but it hasn't reappeared anywhere else as far as I can tell. Have I consigned it to limbo, where only people who know it exists can access it? --Mothperson 00:20, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

That is interesting. I wrote the article on a word processing program (because I'm always losing stuff when I write here) and copied and pasted it. So the apostrophe probably did mess it up. So much to learn. I'm glad you're around to pester. Thank you, yet again, for revealing more of the Wiki Mysteries. --Mothperson 17:41, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Hermes

I agree the picture looks dubiously recent for a 1920 aircraft carrier. At least the "sinking Hermes" will be authentic! Regards. PHG 23:18, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] James Oberg

Aloha. I noticed that you recently moved James Oberg to Jim Oberg. While I'm sure you meant well, I don't believe this move is correct. According to the relevant Wikipedia:Naming conventions, we should use the most common name of a person or thing that does not conflict with the names of other people or things. According to a Google test, the most common name is "James Oberg" (31,800 hits), while "Jim Oberg" only gets 580 hits. See also: Wikipedia:Naming conventions (common names). I will attempt to move the page back. --Viriditas | Talk 23:49, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Not a problem. My take on it, is if there are two Jim Oberg's, we could disambiguate in a number of ways, such as using middle initials, or using parenthesis describing their profession in neutral terms. The only time I've ever run into a problem is on the Emperor Norton article. You might want to check out that talk page for some interesting issues related to naming conventions. --Viriditas | Talk 00:03, 1 May 2005 (UTC)

Thanks, yeah, I figured it out and deleted my question.  :) RickK 08:20, May 5, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] You turned me into a candy bar

It's okay - it's been fixed. But I found my talk page listed under "U" in the candy bars! Still, if I'm going to be anything, a candy bar is far preferable to many other possibilities. Like serial murderer, or mold. Anyway, your help was more than worth my temporary transformation. --Mothperson 13:44, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] LOFNAP

A voice of reason. Yay. I'm not going to respond today as I've spent too much time trying to avoid becoming an entry on List of people who have self-combusted, and I'm getting a little irrational, but you make some good points. Thanks for entering the discussion. I will think about your ideas. --Mothperson 17:36, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Photograph copyright

(moved from front page)

I wasn't sure where to post this on your page. Hope it's OK. Copyright law has been through so many revisions lately that I'm no longer up on it. What's the copyright term for photographs? - Wjbean 23:32 May 31 2005

(moved from my talk page Wjbean 14:39, 2005 Jun 1 (UTC))
I'm not sure. (I can't honestly remember if I was talking in US or UK law when I wrote that...). I assume you're referring to Image:Seventeen.jpg?
Yes Image Seventeen.jpg is the one I'm referring to. It's a good photo of Siegfried. Looks professional.
Having done some more digging, this (http://www.leeds.ac.uk/library/rights/photos.htm) suggests that under UK law it's probably public domain. This (http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/195_copr.html) suggests ditto for American law; it was made before 1923. (I've changed the copyright tag on the image to reflect that)
If that's the case I can probably post the photo of Siegfried in his fifties. If you look at the history of the the Siegfried Sassoon article you'll see where I had a new photo placed and then reverted the page. You opinion of the new photo would be welcome. I'm going to bookmark the two links you give above. Good information there. Wjbean 14:39, 2005 Jun 1 (UTC)
I didn't notice the thumb option until the second time I uploaded the photograph. Of course I'd reduced it's size by then. I'll simply upload it again. Perhaps you can review the 'fair use' clause afterward. Wjbean 20:15, 2005 Jun 1 (UTC)
Upload and placement in article Siegfried Sassoon. Take a look and tell me what you think. Wjbean 20:44, 2005 Jun 1 (UTC)
Added another photo from his service years. Moved this one to the left and the one taken by George to the right. This way the photos take a meander from top to bottom. Wjbean 23:05, 2005 Jun 1 (UTC)

[edit] I Screwed Up Again

I was trying to link to my user page from Wetman's discussion page and I found nothing. Instead of linking to my user page I created an article page Kazuba. How did I screw it up? How do I fix it so others can see my user page? Help! What's with all the stuff User:Wjbean/Wjbean 23:32 date? What does it mean and do? Kazuba 1 Jun 2005

[edit] TFD Vandalism

A heads-up: I haven't tracked down who did it yet, but if you look at WP:TFD, someone's moved your "User has only made two edits, &c" comments to pertain to other votes; you might want to fix them back to the votes you intended them for, as it currently reads as though you're objecting to Kelly Martin and MacGuyverMagic... Shimgray 12:34, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Aha - it was User:Thodin [1] ... Shimgray

Thanks, I have cleaned them up, and noted down a possible fourth sockpuppet on. Thodin has been reported to WP:VIP. He must certainly think he is a VIP. Sjakkalle (Check!) 12:37, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I was just thinking about the site not accepting Opera users. Even if the link is a reference and source, I don't think anyone could stop you from putting a "(Site does not accept Opera users)" or something along those lines beside the link. --metta, The Sunborn 22:14, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Elvis has left the building

Goodbye Shimray. I'm just not cut out for Wikipedia. I have a deep distrust of men because of their love of power and their brutality. Each entry I added on here was met with suspicion and cold heartedness. I just can't handle that much, I know of no other way of saying this, hostility. Genuine curosity, at least mine, had no place on Wikipedia. People prefer to be comfortable with what they have thought and concluded. I do not make others, unlike myself, comfortable. I have been deeply wounded, but I'm used to it. So long. I'll be happier without Wikipedia. This is why ancient libraries and books are burned. intolerance and the love of power. I MUST BE RIGHT! My picture of reality CANNOT be DISTORTED! Wanna bet....I know mine is.User:Kazuba 25 Jun 05

[edit] Britannia Coins

These coins were introduced in 1987 with face values of £100, £50, £25, and £10.

They would have almost certainly been authorised by royal proclamation and I can say with 100% certainty that they are legal tender at their respective face values to any amount. That being said, I certainly would not exchange them at their face values! Whitaker's Almanac would be able to confirm most of this and probably provide a more authorative reference.

[edit] Re: Vandalism

Not a problem. It's my job, ya know ;-) Linuxbeak | Talk | Desk July 6, 2005 16:19 (UTC)

Nope, it crashed on me as well. I don't know if you're an admin or not, but administrators have a button called "rollback". It's a useful tool, and it lets people rollback edits to the last good version (even if the vandal did multiple vandal edits instead of just one). I tried looking at the page first, but the browser went plop. I also noticed on the vandal fighter program (CDVF) that the edit that the vandal made was gigantic. So, basically, the guy destroyed your userpage, and I just reverted it with a click. Linuxbeak | Talk | Desk July 6, 2005 16:32 (UTC)

BoBMF Spitfire

Aologies for the delay in replying but my computer has been playing up so I've not been around for a few days. Happily, the Spitfire on Planform is part of the BoBMF, it was built in 1941 at Castle Bromwich, is in desert camouflage and is a Mark Vb, serial AB910. I'll add that info to the pic captions and description. I've no info on the Devon. Best Wishes - Adrian Pingstone 7 July 2005 16:15 (UTC)

I meant that both Image:Joburg top.jpg on English Wikipedia and Commons:Image:Joburg top.jpg had to be protected. If only the Commons page were protected, someone could just load something else on top of the English Wikipedia page.--Pharos 02:35, 25 July 2005 (UTC)
