Shirley the Medium (Courage the Cowardly Dog episode)

Shirley the Medium is a season one episode of Courage the Cowardly Dog, featuring the first appearance of popular Courage character Shirley[citation needed] and [[Eustace's brother Horace. It is not one of the most popular episodes however, nor one of the most famous, but it does have recognition for these two aspects.[citation needed]

Eustace discovers that his dead brother Horace had a lot of money, and Eustace finds the box containing it, but not the key. Only his brother knew where it was, and he's dead. Eustace wants to find a way to communicate with the dead, and on the Channeling Channel, he sees an ad for Shirley the Medium, who helps contact dead people. He hires her to help him contact his dead brother, and she obliges, but warns him not to use the dead to help himself. After talking to her dead aunt, Eustace manages to get in contact with his brother, who at first refuses to tell him where the key is, but in the end gives in. Eustace finds the key in his hat and fires Shirley. However, things are not as expected. Two monstrous arms emerge and try to pull Eustace and Muriel into the box. Courage calls Shirley for help, and she does, trapping the creature back inside. Eustace noticed that there was money in the box, and foolishly opens it again, being pulled inside. He is surrounded by a lot of money, but realizes he has no means of spending it now that he is trapped inside the box. The creature, whatever it was, has disappeared. Muriel says to Eustace that they'll let him out when they find the key, which Courage is hiding.

- First appearances of Shirley, who has different roles in future episodes, and Horace, Eustace's dead brother.
- Another of Muriel's relatives is seen, her Aunt Gertrude, who taught her to use vinegar in all her recipes. This is also the first appearance of Muriel's vinegar recipes.
