The Shire of West Arthur is a Local Government Area of Western Australia centred on the town of Darkan (33°20′S 116°45′E; post code: 6398). It covers an area of about 2,830 km² in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia generally to the west of Albany Highway about 200km south-east of the capital, Perth. It has a population of 863 (ABS 2001). Local industries, worth approximately $45 million per year to the State's economy[1], are dominated by wool and sheep, and also include timber, grain, forestry, beef, pigs, cattle hide tanning, engineering and earthmoving.

In 1896, the West Arthur Road Board was gazetted. Its name is in relation to the former Arthur Road Board, renamed to Wagin in 1905. On 1 July 1961, it became the West Arthur Shire Council following changes to the Local Government Act.[2]
