Shiraishi Hanjiro Shigeaki

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shiraishi Hanjiro Shigeaki, ? 1842 - March 1, 1927 was a Japanese martial artist and a senior proponent of the koryu martial art Shinto Muso-ryu.

Shiraishi held a menkyo kaiden, teachers license, of Shinto Muso-ryu and would essentially become the arts head Shihan. He is considered by some to be the 24th headmaster even though no such title/rank existed. Shiraishi successfully helped transform Shinto Muso-ryu from a closely-guarded secret art to a well-established exotic art in the Japanese mainland.

Under Shiraishi's leadership, Shinto Muso-ryu added Isshin-ryu kusarigamajutsu to its curriculum, and adopted Uchida Ryu Tanjojutsu, the art created by Shiraishi's peer Uchida Ryogoro, who would later be awarded with the rank of menkyo kaiden.

Among Shiraishi's students was Shimizu Takaji.
