Shirō Kamui (司狼 神威 Shirō Kamui) is the protagonist of the manga and anime series X, originally authored by Clamp. He is voiced by Kenichi Suzumura in the TV anime series.

  • sex: male
  • age: 15
  • date of birth: unknown
  • powers: powerful psychic, demonstrating telekinetic ability, the proverbial "power (authority) of God"
  • kekkai (barrier field): perfect sphere
  • relatives: Shirou Tooru / Magami Tooru (mother; deceased), Magami Tokiko
  • romantic interests: Monou Fuuma, Monou Kotori

When the audience is first introduced to Kamui at the very beginning of X, he appears to be nothing more than a brooding and somewhat cocky fifteen year old from Okinawa who is gifted with extraordinary telekinetic powers. He has returned to the place where he spent his early childhood, Tokyo, for the first time in six years, prompted to do so by the mysterious dying words of his mother, Shirou Tooru, that his destiny awaited him in Tokyo.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

After returning to Tokyo he (unsuccessfully) tries to avoid his childhood friends Kotori and Fuuma Monou, to keep them from becoming involved in his "destiny", namely the battle to determine the fate of the world. Kamui must choose to join the Dragons of Heaven, who fight to save mankind, or the Dragons of Earth, who fight to destroy mankind and save the Earth/Nature. Because of Kotori and Fuuma, Kamui chooses the Dragons of Heaven. Fuuma then awakens as the other "Kamui", kills Kotori and joins the Dragons of Earth. Kamui is left comatose after the death of Kotori and betrayal of Fuuma. He is saved by Subaru Sumeragi, another of the Dragons of Heaven. Kamui makes it his goal to bring back Fuuma, but it is implied that this is not his "true wish".

The name "Kamui" has two meanings: 1) One who represents the majesty of God; and 2) One who destroys the majesty of God.
