[edit] Overview

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Shinzon leads a coup d'état of the Romulan Senate, becoming praetor, and then attempts to destroy all life on Earth, the center of the United Federation of Planets.

Shinzon was a clone of Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation and later movies. Shinzon was created by the Romulans with the intent of replacing Picard and using the clone to bring about the Federation's downfall. The plan was abandoned when a new government, which feared that the Federation's discovery of such a program would lead to war, came to power. Shinzon was sent to work in the dilithium mines on Remus, the twin planet of Romulus, where he was protected by a Reman who later became his viceroy. Despite his human heritage, Shinzon more strongly identifies with the Remans.

During the Dominion War, Shinzon led Reman forces to victory against Dominion forces several times. In 2379, Shinzon leads a coup over the Romulan Senate that leaves the praetor and most of the Senate dead, killed by thalaron radiation. Shinzon becomes praetor. However, the cloning process that created Shinzon is killing him, and he requires a fresh infusion of Picard's DNA to stay alive.

Shinzon decided to fulfill his and his adopted people's destiny by assembling his forces and building the Scimitar, which is equipped with a cloaking device, 52 disruptor banks, and 27 photon torpedo bays; Picard describes it as "a predator". In this vessel, Shinzon reveals his existence to Picard and his senior officers from the USS Enterprise-E, who travel to Romulus in response to Shinzon's apparent peace overture to the Federation. Prior to this meeting, Picard has no knowledge of his doppelgänger.

Shinzon's invitation is a ruse; he later attacks the Enterprise, whose crew infers his plan to eradicate life on Earth and therefore destabilize the Federation. With both the Scimitar and the Enterprise severely damaged, Picard beams aboard the Reman ship to destroy its thalaron generator. Picard kills Shinzon in a melee. Lieutenant Commander Data shortly thereafter rescues Picard and destroys the thalaron device, along with the Scimitar, dying in the process.
