[edit] MMA career

Aoki holds an MMA record of 10-2, with 5 submissions and 1 TKO and is the current Shooto middleweight champion, a title he earned after his defeat of Akira Kikuchi in 2006. In August of 2006 he made his PRIDE debut at Bushido 12, submitting American fighter Jason Black in under two minutes with a triangle choke. After beating French, Aoki was to face highly ranked lightweight Joachim Hansen at PRIDE Shockwave 2006. Aoki, to the surprise of many, submitted Hansen with ease with a gogoplata—the first successful submission using a gogoplata in a Pride FC event. On February 17th, 2007, Aoki successfully defended his Shooto title against Kikuchi and won via split decision. Aoki announced afterwards that he was to be the Shooto entrant into the forthcoming PRIDE Lightweight Grand Prix tournament.
