Shining is a Swedish black metal band formed in 1996, that incorporate many doom metal elements in their music. Due to the depressive undertones of their music and the mostly suicide-themed lyrics, Shining are often referred to as "suicidal black metal".

The band split-up in August 2004 and the fourth album, IV / The Eerie Cold, was supposed to be the last, but the band reformed later the same year with a new line-up capable of live shows. The fifth album, which was at first going to be called V / Besvikelsens Dystra Monotoni but was later changed to V / Halmstad, is scheduled to be released in early 2007.

Shining openly promotes suicide and self-harm in all its forms (e.g. drugs) in their lyrics. The founder of the band, Niklas Kvarforth, has claimed with content that there have been some cases of people committing suicide at least partially under influence of Shining's music.[1]

The band's name does not refer to the book The Shining or the film based on it, but according to Kvarforth it means "the path to enlightenment".[1]

Due to the disappearing of Niklas Kvarforth in July 2006, a rumor was spread that he was presumed to have committed suicide. On 23rd of August, 2006 the band posted a statement of their website declearing that Kvarforth has disappeared but is probably not dead. The band will continue with a new singer as one of the wishes from Kvarforth.[2]

[edit] Controversy

At the february 3rd concert at Diezel in Halmstad, it was revealed that the band-member "Ghoul" is in fact Niklas "Kvarforth" Olsson. Joining him on vocals were Hungarian and Norwegian vocalists Attila Csihar (appearing in the costume he performs in with Burial Chamber Trio), Maniac and Nattefrost, respectively. The concert was very violent and hateful in nature, with Kvarforth shouting words like "whores!" at the audience and also fighting the audience, and the guest-vocalists. Razorblades were handed to members of the audience and one was kicked in the chest after touching the singers genitals; the same singer was also exposed to numerous physical assaults by Maniac (ex Mayhem). Another got his hair pulled when he headbanged and later said that he was sore the day after the concert.

It was supposed to be the release of the highly anticipated Shining V Halmstad album but the album was never released, as many people later found out neither the band or even the record company had any copies of the album so it wasn't the bands fault. Hellhammer was supposed to play one song on drums "I Och Med Insikt Skall Du Förgå" it was obvious that this was the song since the Ludwig Witt didn`t know how to play the cymbal parts, the reason for Hellhammer not showing up was that his drum kit never arrived at the venue.

One member of the audience recalls the kicking: "The singer was standing with his leather pants zipped up and some drunk Swede touched his crotch and suddenly the singer got this shocked expression and shouted "Don`t touch me" and kicked the fan in the chest, I was afraid the whole time"[3]
