Shine (nightclub)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shine is a dance club located in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Alongside Lush in Portrush, Shine is the county's largest and best-known club.

The club was started in 1995 by DJ Alan Simms. Since it's inception it has been held in the Mandela hall, part of Queen's University students' union. However since September 2006 the entire Students' Union building is used, bringing its capacity to almost 2400 people. These nights are know as 'Super Shine' and are the trend from now on.

The club has no formal music policy, but techno is prevalent on most nights.

DJs and live acts that have played in Shine include Carl Cox, Green Velvet, Deep Dish, Layo and Bushwacka!, Felix da House Cat and Slam, who have ran a Soma Records night at the club in the past. Phil Kieran is a former resident and regular guest at the club. BBC Radio 1 has held events at Shine in the past with Pete Tong and, unusually, Tim Westwood appearing in the main room.

The club's founder Simms also has a record label called Shine Recordings. The label's two main releases so far have been by Jon Carter and Justin Robertson, who also play regularly at the club. In 2005 Simms opened another club in the city, The Stiff Kitten. The name derives from Joy Division's original name.

The club's website has a very popular message board.

In 2006 Shine events became less frequent, operating on a monthly schedule.
