Shibata (新発田市; -shi) is a city located in Niigata, Japan.
As of 2005, the city has an estimated population of 104,633 and the density of 196.37 persons per km². The total area is 532.82 km².
The city was founded on January 1, 1947.
The ruins of Shibata castle are the main visitor attraction and provide the backdrop to the spring cherry blossom viewing parties. Also of note is the Shimizuen garden and Ijimino park.
Shibata is the hometown of Sasagawa Miwa, a popular Japanese folk singer. In October 2005 she released a single, called "紫雲寺" which was available only in Niigata. The song is also included on her February 2006 album "夜明け" (Yoake) which is available throughout Japan (as well as through many online retailers).
