The Shikon jewel is able to boost one's power drastically, no matter he is good or evil. If the jewel is used for good it will glow, when used for evil, it will turn dark. Its first appearance was in season 1 when mistress centipede bit Kagome on her side. Afterwards Kagome accidentally shattered the jewel into thousands shards to obtain it back from a big crow demon. The only ones able to see the shards in hidden places are Kagome and Kikyo. Legend says a war of demons and priestess Midoriko is still waging inside the jewel.
