Shereen Nanjiani (born. October 4, 1961, Elderslie, Renfrewshire) is a radio journalist with BBC Radio Scotland.

Before launching her radio career, Nanjiani was the main news presenter at STV Central, having presented the news programme, Scotland Today since 1987. She is the first Asian-Scottish presenter in Scotland.

Nanjiani was the longest serving female news presenter at STV. Her partnership with Viv Lumsden throughout the nineties made Scotland Today Scotland's most watched evening news programme. Shereen also presented several special reports for this regional television station, and gave the channel's coverage an international flavour.

Her departure was regarded as a major blow to STV, after a round of mass redundancies at the ITV franchise.

Nanjani joined BBC Radio Scotland in 2006.

[edit] Early Years

Nanjiani was born in Elderslie, her father a Pakistani eye surgeon and her mother a teacher from England. Nanjiani studied at Glasgow University and graduated with an MA in Philosophy.

Shereen Nanjiani clinched a job as a trainee journalist in 1983 with STV. She was called in to present her first bulletin in 1987, when Sheena MacDonald was off ill. This was her break and she has graced our screens ever since.

Nanjiani has hosted many programmes for STV, including religious affairs show Eikon and Secret Scotland in the late nineties. Nanjiani also hosted several editions of the Scottish Politician of the Year Awards on STV. On 16 February 2006, it was announced that Shereen, along with colleagues Jane Lewis and Sarah Heaney had accepted voluntary redundancy from STV. [1]

Nanjiani, left on 5 May 2006. Her co-presenter John Mackay commented on her departure on-air, saying "You are a national institution and Scotland's most popular newsreader". In interviews with the Scottish press, Nanjiani said that she was looking forward to other exciting projects away from live television.

[edit] Joining the opposition

On 20 June 2006, it was announced that Nanjiani was 'switching sides' to the BBC, and made her debut as a radio presenter on Friday 11 August. This is part of changes to the presenting line-up of BBC Radio Scotland's news and current affairs programmes. She is at the helm of lunchtime programme, Scotland Live, every Friday. [2].

Shereen Nanjiani is also regarded as a fitness fanatic, enjoying aerobics, gym workouts and Pilates. Nanjiani's partner is former Scotland Today journalist, Mark Smith. They live in Glasgow's West End.
