Shelgon (コモルー Komorū?, Komoruu in original Japanese language versions) is one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon from the Pokémon Franchise - a series of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media created by Satoshi Tajiri. Shelgon made its introduction as a third generation Pokémon, upon the release of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.

Shelgon is known as the Endurance Pokémon for two reasons: it sits inside its shell dreaming of growing wings and becoming a beautiful dragon, and it has a high defense to withstand powerful attacks

Shelgon's name is a combination of "shell" and "dragon". Its Japanese comes from the verb "komoru" (篭る), meaning "to seclude oneself" or "to stay cooped up".

[edit] Biological characteristics

Within Shelgon's body, its cells are continually changing to prepare for evolution into Salamence. Even though this Pokémon's shell is heavy, it makes up for it by drawing in its stubby legs and rolling around. This shell is very thick and strong, similar to bones. The shell protects disruption of its internal cell development. When it is finally ready for evolution, its shell sheds almost instantly.

While in this stage of its evolution, Shelgon fasts in order to grow hardier from hunger. It grows tired easily due to its lack of food and its heavy shell weighing it down.

[edit] In the video games

Shelgon can only be obtained by evolving Bagon.

Thanks to its thick shell, Shelgon has great Defense, even greater than that of its evolution Salamence. However, Salamence has much more HP and special attack. Shelgon also has the Rock Head ability, allowing it to use the powerful Double-Edge attack without damaging itself. Shelgon also has high Speed points, but not as high as Salamence.

It evolves from Bagon at level 30 and into Salamence at level 50. Shelgon is hailed as one of the best Pokemon that is not fully evolved in the game. It is also widely known as the best pure dragon type so far (although some will argue its counterpart Dragonair is better). Shelgon is also famous for having the highest defense stat of all dragon type Pokemon.

[edit] In the anime

In episode 319: "Let Bagons be Bagons" with Bagon in Season # 7, A trainer wanted her Bagon to evolve into a Shelgon because it fantascised about flying and kept jumping off cliffs and getting hurt by doing it. At the end of that episode, Bagon evolves into Shelgon. In the episode of Pokémon Advanced Battle: "Vanity Affair" Drakeins from the Elite Four battles Ash's Pikachu with his Shelgon. Drake's Shelgon wins with a combo of Dragon Claw and Dragonbreath.

Shelgon appears three times in the EX Dragon set, not surprisingly, as Shelgon is a Dragon-type Pokémon. Shelgon later appears in the EX Deoxys set. In all cases, Shelgon requires Water and/or Fire Energy-cards in order to use some of its attacks. In the EX Delta Species set, it appears as a Fire Type, being a Delta Species.
