Shelby is a city in Richland County, Ohio, United States. It is part of the Mansfield, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 9,821 at the 2000 census.

Shelby is located at 40°53′5″N, 82°39′34″W (40.884645, -82.659529)GR1, along the Black Fork of the Mohican River.[1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.2 km² (5.1 mi²). 13.1 km² (5.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (1.37%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 9,821 people, 4,073 households, and 2,667 families residing in the city. The population density was 752.4/km² (1,949.3/mi²). There were 4,330 housing units at an average density of 331.7/km² (859.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.40% White, 0.14% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.02% of the population.

There were 4,073 households out of which 31.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.1% were married couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.5% were non-families. 30.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $43,373. Males had a median income of $32,551 versus $21,573 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,096. About 7.4% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.1% of those under age 18 and 7.4% of those age 65 or over.

  • Shelby's claim to fame is that it is the birthplace of seamless tubing, and still home to one of the largest seemless tube production facilities, DOFASCO-Copperweld.
  • Shelby was home to the 1st professional football team, the "Shelby Blues" (1902)
  • Shelby was the home of the "Shelby Cycle Company"[dates?] and the "Shelby Motor Car Company" (1901-1903)
  • Author Dawn Powell graduated Shelby High School in 1914.
  • The school's mascot is the Whippet
