Shedinja (ヌケニン? Nukenin in original Japanese language versions) are one of the fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the Pokémon media franchise.

The name Shedinja is a portmanteau of the words "shed" and ninja. Its Japanese name, Nukenin, originates in nukegara (empty shell) and ninja. It is based on the idea of the empty shell of its real life counterpart, the cicada, when it molts.

[edit] Biological characteristics

In the Pokémon universe, Shedinja are the shed carapaces of a newly evolved Ninjask that have taken on a ghostly sentience of their own. Their hard-layered bodies are hollow and utterly dark, and they do not possess organs normally considered vital for life. As Nincada are based on the cicada nymph and Ninjask are based on the adult cicada, Shedinja are based on the shed exoskeleton left behind during the cicada's metamorphosis. Like shed exoskeletons, Shedinja are completely immobile and do not breathe.[1] They are able to float and hover, however, though their wings remain completely still. They also have a halo-like object above their heads. If one were to look at a Shedinja from the back, one would see a large, gaping hole where the Ninjask emerged. An old legend, however, states that a Shedinja will steal the souls of anyone who looks into the opening on its back.

[edit] In the Pokémon video games

The method by which Shedinja are obtained is unique within the Pokémon video games. When a player evolves a Nincada into a Ninjask with five or fewer Pokémon in their team at the time of evolution, a Shedinja will appear in one of the empty slots. The Shedinja will be in the same type of Poké Ball as the Ninjask and will have the same set of moves.

Shedinja have only one Hit Point, and they cannot gain more in any way. Their other stats are also very poor, with the exception of their physical attack. Offsetting their low Hit Points, Shedinja's unique Wonder Guard ability completely protects them from all damage taken from nearly all attacks that are not super-effective against them. Dual Bug- and Ghost-type Pokémon, Shedinja take super-effective damage from five different types, including Fire and Rock. Although Shedinja's ability is able to protect them from attack damage in most cases, Shedinja can still be damaged by indirect methods, such as damaging weather or status effects.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, after the player gains the ability to evolve, the evolution of a Nincada will result in the appearance of a Shedinja in its Friend Area. Shedinja are the only Pokémon in the game with a resistance to the A button attack, receiving only 1 point of damage when hit. Unlike the main series games, Shedinja of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon can gain HP through both level up and the use of items.

[edit] In the Pokémon anime

Shedinja appears twice in the Pokémon anime, in the episodes "The Princess and the Togepi!" and "The Togepi Mirage!", where it is the most powerful Pokémon belonging to the antagonist, Hansen, of the Mirage Kingdom. Hansen used it alongside two Ninjask in his attempt to capture Misty's Togepi in order to fulfill a ritual and become successor to the crown.[2] Misty's Corsola could not defeat Shedinja, but her Gyarados knocked Shedinja out with a single Flamethrower attack.[3]

[edit] In the Pokémon Trading Card Game

Shedinja has made two appearances in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, a collectible card game in which players simulate Pokémon battles.[4]

Shedinja has appeared in the card game two times thus far, both times as a Stage 1 Pokémon:

  • EX Dragon (Grass-type)
  • EX Deoxys (Psychic-type)

Unlike in the video games, in which a Shedinja is created when a Ninjask is evolved, a Shedinja in the card game is treated as a regular evolution to Nincada. However, the EX Dragon Ninjask has a Poké-Power that allows the player to play a Shedinja from their hand as a Basic Pokémon when Ninjask is played to evolve Nincada. It also does not have 1 HP (or 10 in the card game), but around 30. The EX Dragon Shedinja carries the Wonder Guard Poké-Body, protecting it from damage by the attacks of evolved Pokémon.
