"She's Out of My Life" was the fourth single to be released by singer Michael Jackson from his successful Off the Wall album in 1980. Unlike the three previous singles, which were all dance-oriented funk/disco songs, this song was an understated emotional ballad, written by Tom Bahler. Jackson's vocals on this record were judged some of his best. A crucial moment in the song happened when Jackson, near the end of the song, began to break down in the studio and sang the word "life" with a breaking voice as he sobbed and moaned at the end. Some say it may have been a break up with his rumored girlfriend Tatum O'Neal.[citation needed] The song was one of the stand-out moments of Jackson's tours for the next fifteen years. It was covered more than twenty-five years later by soul singer Patti LaBelle for her album Classic Moments in 2005.

Jackson tried many takes of the last few minutes of the song, but always ended in the same way – breaking down in tears. Finally producer Quincy Jones allowed it into the song. The song peaked at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song was written by Tom Bahler, after Karen Carpenter broke up with him when she found out he had fathered a child with another woman. (From "The Carpenters: The Untold Story" by Ray Coleman).
