Rules

Welcome to my talk page. Feel free to leave a message. I can't wait to hear what you have to say. I only ask that you follow these rules.

  1. Please sign all comments. If you forget to sign a comment, don't be afraid to go back and change it. It's better to fix you own mistake than to have someone else fix it for you.
  2. Please keep all chat civil. No matter what point you are trying to get across, the most efective way to do so is to remain civil. Plus, failure to be civil encourages others to not be civil, stating a chain of unwanted events.
  3. If you are starting a new section, please use the [ + ] tab next to the edit tab (if using Monobook skin) or click here.
  4. It is always a good idea, even when writing articles, to click Show preview before saving you changes. Doing so might keep you from making stupid mistakes. It's saved me many times.
  5. Have Fun! Remember, if you don't have fun, then you are violating the rules of my talk page.

I'm Online!

I am currently online. However, this status may be inaccurate. I have a dial-up connection, and it's possible I have taken a phone call, which leaves me no time to update my status. I may have also just forgotten to update it before going offline. [edit] Sandbox

I was wondering, in MediaWiki, how do you set up a system to automatically delete the sandbox every 12 hours, like wikipedia does? If you know, could you please tell me here. Thanks, Shardsofmetal 01:45, 23 August 2005 (UTC)

This is done with a bot. Please see User:Sandbot. Angela. 14:07, August 23, 2005 (UTC)
My script runs using the Pywikipedia Bot Framework. It is scheduled through a cron job to run every 12 hours. --AllyUnion (talk) 17:18, 23 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] UserBox edits

As part of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Userboxes, I removed the fair-use images from {{User no respect}} {{User:Feureau/UserBox/ComedyCommunication}} {{User Nader}} and used subst: to avoid a Meta-Template. If you can find free use images to put in place, that would be great. Thanks! 1001001 04:57, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Rocktopus As Fast As.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Rocktopus As Fast As.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. Nv8200p talk 00:29, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] As Fast As

Hi Shardsofmetal. Your message lists a couple of suggestions for notability, but unfortunately the article itself detailed none of these, making it speedy deletable under criterion A7. You mention that they are the same band as Rocktopus, which I see already has an article. According to the Rocktopus article, As Fast As is their current name, so it makes sense to move Rocktopus to As Fast As (rewriting the intro to take this into account) and leaving Rocktopus as a redirect page. I'll do that now. CLW 07:46, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

I just wanted to thank you for making the As Fast As article. But, Shouldn't there be info about current tours, and such? Moterola 02:17, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Infobox

I think the article is definitely a big improvement over the last version of the article. Is that the real name for the tables? Pretty tables? If so, they are pretty indeed. Deyyaz [ Talk | Contribs ] 23:13, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bands

Hey, If you ever see this I think you should have a look at List of bands from Maine, k? Deyyaz [ Talk | Contribs ] 01:42, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Good thing I saw it before it, and all similar lists, were deleted. Shardsofmetal [ Talk | Contribs ] 03:05, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:Favorite album 4.png

Thanks for uploading Image:Favorite album 4.png. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 03:05, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Guess I forgot to select {{PD-self}} when uploading it. oops... Shardsofmetal [ Talk | Contribs ] 03:02, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] User:ais523/votesymbols.js

I found a section of IE-only code here (as I don't have access to any other browsers at the moment (editing from a public computer), I searched for each of the words in the Mozilla manual until one of them wasn't found), and replaced it. (The replacement is marked by Mozilla as 'not part of any standard', but as it's in their manual it's more likely to work.) I'd be interested to know whether it now works on FireFox. --ais523 07:39, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you

Did I thank you for the Barnstar already? I guess not... Well then, thank you! :-) I'm happy to see people find my tools useful. Happy editing, Misza13 18:20, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Template:User browser:Firefox

You recently reverted my edit to the User firefox template changing the image to a public domain version of the Firefox logo.

Again, the people behind the Open Clipart Library lack the right to release the image into the public domain.

You state that "It's clearly a derivative work".

Yes, it is. It's a close copy of a highly distinctive logo.

The image is up for deletion at Commons:Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Firefox logo.png. So far, the vote is 3-1 in favor of Keep.

That's irrelevant. The image can't be voted into the public domain. The "keep" arguments are invalid, and the closing sysop should disregard them accordingly.

If the image is kept at commons, it can be used here.

If the image is kept at the Commons, it will be due to an error that we have no obligation to uphold.

If you disagree with it's usage, I'd suggest you vote at commons. A couple of points mentioned there:

  • It is possible that Firefox released the image into the PD to the Open Clipart library to be distributed with Firefox for software packages that only distribute entirely free material.
Firstly, "Firefox" is the name of the software. Secondly, Mozilla has done no such thing. Please read their logo usage policy. The icon's globe portion (excluding the fox) is available under three open licenses, but even that isn't in the public domain.
  • If somebody contacts the Open Clipart library, and gets them to remove the image, then I will change my vote to delete.
It makes no difference what they do. They're in the wrong.
  • Although it resembles the Firefox logo, it lacks a lot of the detail the real image has, making it able to be available in the PD.
The law simply doesn't work that way.

If the image is kept after the request has closed, I will change the template back.

If you do, I'll revert your change without further explanation (and protect the template if necessary). This is a serious, nonnegotiable legal issue (and one that can't be voted away). —David Levy 23:18, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
I read your reply on my user page. It seemed to me that you weren't very pleasant about this matter. I hope that I didn't seem mean earlier. I'm still wondering, however, how it can be that an image can remain on Wikimedia servers, but can't be used on any pages. Also, can I use this image on my user page, provided it stays? If you respond to my user page, please be nicer than last time. You violated the second rule on my talk page, and Wikipedia:Civility. Shardsofmetal [ TalkContribs ] 00:14, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
I'm not attempting to be uncivil. I'm simply conveying the reality of the situation. I'm sorry that I'm unable to make that more pleasant than it is.
The image is not legal, and it should not remain on Wikimedia servers. I'm not telling you this to be rude; I'm telling you because this is a very important legal issue for the Wikimedia Foundation. Again, I'm sorry that I can't sugar-coat this for you. —David Levy 00:27, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
I'm also sorry if I was uncivil at all. It's not your fault, I just got stressed trying to defend an image I uploaded with good intentions. Since the image appears to be a copyvio, and I can't use it on the template anyway, I've done the responsible thing and changed my vote to Delete. I have also decided to take a break from uploading PD images for a while. I uploaded this image with the intent of improving Wikimedia, which it clearly did not do. I hope my next PD image contribution will be a better one. Thanks for your understanding, Shardsofmetal [ TalkContribs ] 02:08, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
You were not uncivil. Furthermore, you are not to blame for this situation. I fully understand why you defended the image, and your intentions were never in question.
This occurrence (encountering an image inappropriately labeled "public domain" by a reputable source) is unusual, and I hope that it won't discourage you from continuing to contribute to Wikipedia and to the Commons. —David Levy 04:47, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] User:Feureau/UserBox/ComedyCommunication

Well, I don't mind having that moved to the original author, but the problem is, that lots of people has already updated their userboxes and using the gus solution template to tell them it's been moved again is inappropriate usage. And contacting everyone on that what links here list is just too much for one to do. I think it's best to just leave it there. Feureau 13:01, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi! Glad to have made your day, why don't you spread WikiLove too! ;)
On the topic: well, it's considered impolite to just go in and edit people's userpage. Also, moving the template must involve the deletion of the resulting redirect from the move. That'll cause dead links to appear on people's pages. And that's a LOT of people that'll get effected. With the amount of work and lingering flak, I still think it'd be best to just leave the template there.Feureau 03:36, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, Shardsofmetal, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is Stressbusters, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

[edit] Re:User:ais523/Sandbox/Clock

The problem was with the Taylor series expansions to the sin and cos functions I was using; as the article says, they don't work very well far from zero (ie times late-night UTC when you pointed out the problem). I've fixed it by changing the time that represents zero from 3:00 UTC to 15:00 UTC (so times can't be as far from zero now) and increasing the number of terms in the expansion. There's now also a new syntax for using it; {{User:ais523/Sandbox/ClockUTC}} for the current time or {{User:ais523/Sandbox/ClockUTC|20|10}} for a specific time (I've left the redirect from Clocknow for now but might request its deletion eventually, so you may want to change over the syntax). Hope that helps! --ais523 16:45, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

User:Shardsofmetal/Clock looks pretty good! At least on the browser I'm using at the moment (IE), there's an extra blank section just below the clock; I've edited your version to remove it. (Revert me if it breaks anything in FireFox; I don't think it will, but I don't know for certain.) By the way, I have no problem with other people editing 'my' subpages; it's a wiki after all! --ais523 07:27, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
The last AC meeting (full log)
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.
