Shawkat Osman

Shawkat Osman (Bangla: শওকত ওসমান; also Shaukat Osman) (1917-1998) was a Bangladeshi novelist and short story writer. He was born in 1917 in the district of Hughli, West Bengal.

Born in what was then West Bengal, Shawkat Osman came to Bangladesh (at that time East Pakistan) after the partition of India in 1947. He died in Dhaka in 1998.

Janani was Osman's first novel. Janani (Mother) portrays the demolition of a family because of the rural and urban divide. In Kritadaser Hasi (Laugh of a slave), Osman lunges into the darkness of contemporary politics and reality of dictatorship.
