Shapotou is a large region in Ningxia Province, China, noted for the Tengger Desert.

It is the site of the world-renowned Shapotou Desert Experimental Research Station, which seeks to develop methods to prevent sand dunes from shifting. Shifting sands are of special concern in the region, as the trans-Asian Baolan railway passes through it.
