Shanty Bay, Ontario

Shanty Bay is a charming small village in Ontario, about 5 km outside the city of Barrie. It is on Kempenfelt Bay (Lake Simcoe), and is a community of Oro-Medonte. The Underground railroad influenced the history of the town, where many African-American refugees first settled near the water in shanties (small homes), contributing toward the name of the village.
Besides the residential neighbourhoods, Shanty Bay consists of Shanty Bay Public elementary school, a firehall, a small convenience store called The Village Milk, Shanty Bay Golf and Country Club, a government dock and boat launch, numerous parks and walking paths, & a bicycle trail. Shanty Bay also has one of Canada's oldest churches, St. Thomas Anglican Church, built in 1842.
Lucius Richard O'Brien (1832-1899), the noted Canadian oil and watercolour landscape painter was from Shanty Bay.
