Shanghai Metro, Line 1
Line 1 was the first metro line in Shanghai to be opened in 1995. It runs from Gongfu Xincun in the north, via Shanghai Railway Station to Xinzhuang in the south. This line added a very important transport method to the city, making transportation between home and work much more convenient for thousands of inhabitants of Shanghai.
The part running from Gongfu Xincun to Shanghai Railway Station was opened later, December 28, 2004. This resulted in the metro line being extended by 12.4km. The line is now 28.8km long total.
This line covers many important points in Shanghai, and it is clear that the line was designed to do so. Of course because of the large amount of important locations all located on this one line it also means this line is extremely busy. It is the busiest lines of the metro system, and will continue to be so in the foreseeable future.
The most important stations on this line are:
- Shanghai Railway Station - Connects the metro with the main railway station in the city, allowing easy transport to and from other provinces. Transfers to Line 3 and Line 4 are available.
- People's Square - Very important business and shopping area, but also close to multiple important tourist attractions making the station busy all day long. You can interchange Line 2 at this stop.
- Xujiahui - Important business and shopping area.
- Shanghai Indoor Stadium - Nearby is the sports stadium of the same name and the biggest regional and interregional bus station in the city. You can interchange Line 4 and transfer to Line 3 at this stop.
- Shanghai South Railway Station - Connects the metro to the second railway station of the city which mostly accommodates train connections to more southern cities. You can interchange Line 3 at this stop.
- Xinzhuang - The south terminal of this Line. You can interchange Line 5 at this stop.
(It is preferred to use interchange instead of transfer since interchange means "Free transfer" in Shanghai Metro while "transfer" means "Non-free transfer")
