Shand is a fictional character featured in Ian Irvine's The View from the Mirror novels. He is an elderly man, who lives in the small village of Tullin.
Shand is a short man, with small piercing green eyes. Though he is old, he is handsome with a weather beaten face. He has iron, grey hair that is thinning and also has a long white beard. Shand's hair was once a deep chestnut colour. He has a soft low voice, but it can change and become as cold as a glacier and as hard as a whip, often with the aid of his Art.
Shand is a caring, modest man that immediately appears to be more than he makes out. It is often clear that he has considerable power with the Secret Art, though Shand often denies having any power at all. Shand is a master at the art of map-making and has a love of gellon (a fruit grown at Tullin). He is often the voice of reason and is a source of great wisdom and intelligence, something he also denies. Shand is consumed from a failure of his past and often seems sad. Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
It is later revealed that Shand is a great practitioner of the Secret Art and was once a mover and shaper of Santhenar. He also goes by the name "Gyllias". Catagory Name and History
