Shamkhal (title)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shamkhal or Samkhal is the Kumyk title for the khans of Tarki, Daghestan, during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Though their power fluctuated over the years, the Shamkhals occasionally dominated most of Daghestan. Kumyk nationalists cite the Shamkhalate as their inspiration for seeking an independent Kumyk state or Kumyk dominance within Daghestan.[1]
