Shaikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi

Shaikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi (born 25 May 1948) is the present ruler of the Emirate of Fujairah, having taken over after the death of his father Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi in 1974. The Sharqi family has an extremely warm relationship with the Abu Dhabi ruling Nahyan family. This allows them access to Federal funds and ministerial posts, exceeding allocations of similar small Emirates. Educated in Britain, Shaikh Hamad is a progressive ruler, and his reformist leanings have held him in good stead with businessmen and expatriates alike.

He attended the Mons Military Academy in 1970 and from 1971-74 served as Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries.

Shaikh amad is married to Shaikha Fatima bint Thani Al Maktoum from the Al Maktoum family, the royal family of Dubai. He has six children - three boys and three girls, of whom Shaikh Mohammed (b.1986) was appointed the crown prince of Fujairah on the 8th of January 2007. Shaikh Rashid (b.1987) is head of the media department of Fujairah and head of the Tennis Association of Fujairah, they are both continuing their university studies in the United Kingdom at the British American cCollege in London. Sheikh Maktoum (b.1991) is currently studying in school in Fujariah.
