Shadchan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shadchan is a Yiddish word (Ashkenazic Hebrew) for Matchmaker.

It is widely believed that Shadchan is a busybody, someone who knows everybody and everything. This is a classic example of Hollywood defineing a prevailing myth. In reality Judiasm has found that a good match or couple are most likely to be people with the same, or very similar, backgrounds. Therefore a matchmaker is most likely to be someone who is familiar with both sides, and is therefore in a position to introduce the interested parties to each other.
