[edit] Character outline
Shūhei is an extremely mature and calm individual, a state that is slightly at odds with his somewhat punk-like appearance. He is used to taking responsibility, and tends to avoid violence when possible. He seems to be virtuous, much like his captain's image until the latter was revealed to be a traitor.
Shūhei has several tattoos — a number 69 on his face, as well as lines on the arms and neck. He is also seen with a bandage across his face and has three lines running vertically down the right side of his face, scars that resulted from an injury when several huge hollows attacked a group of students (including Momo Hinamori, Izuru Kira, and Renji Abarai) he was leading into the living world for a lesson in fighting dummy hollows.
[edit] History
Shūhei's past is not explored in-depth, although it is known that he was an extremely talented student in the shinigami academy. His talent allowed him to become a seated officer in Gotei 13 without having to pass additional tests. Despite his talent though, he failed the entrance exam for the academy twice (according to Izuru Kira). When he was at the 6th (final) year at the academy, he was the upperclassman senpai of Izuru Kira, Momo Hinamori, and Renji Abarai.
[edit] Synopsis
[edit] Soul Society arc
During the invasion of Soul Society, Shūhei engaged in a battle with the 11th division 5th seat, Yumichika Ayasegawa. Despite Shūhei's higher rank, he was defeated when Yumichika used the true form of his initial release, draining Shūhei's spiritual power away. Shūhei complains that he fought dirty by doing so.
After learning that Tōsen has been conspiring with Sōsuke Aizen, Shūhei and Tōsen's friend, Captain Sajin Komamura of the 7th Division, visit the grave of a friend of Tōsen's, where they both agree they must open Tōsen's eyes to Aizen's true nature. Immediately after, he is seen trying to help an intoxicated Izuru Kira, who is drinking away his troubles with Rangiku Matsumoto.
[edit] Bount arc
Shūhei, among others, is assigned by Tōshirō Hitsugaya to defeat the Bount in the human world. He rescues Orihime Inoue and Kuroud from Rukia Kuchiki, who had been possessed by Mabashi's doll, Ritz. Rukia temporarily gains control and tells Shūhei and Orihime to kill her instead of letting her continue being forced to hurt her comrades. Shūhei is prepared to strike, but Orihime stops him and forces Ritz out of Rukia with her Sōten Kisshun. Ritz tries to possess Orihime, but Shūhei disables the doll. He is stopped from killing Mabashi by Maki Ichinose, who appears and carries Mabashi away. After Yumichika Ayasegawa finds the Bount's hideout, Kira, Shūhei, Yumichika, and Matsumoto are ambushed by Ugaki's doll, Gesell, and delay the doll in order to allow Ichigo and Renji to proceed further into the cave.
[edit] Arrancar arc
Shūhei appears briefly when he speaks with Jūshirō Ukitake, who is overseeing Rukia's training of Orihime.[1] Shūhei has assumed his former captain's duties. He admits that a captain's job is very busy and mentions that Tōsen was not one to ask favors of his subordinates and thus had previously done most of the work for the division, even though Shūhei was second in command. Ukitake observes that while four months have passed since Tōsen left, Shūhei is still recovering from the revelation that his former captain was a traitor.
[edit] Zanpakutō
The name of Shūhei's zanpakutō has yet to be revealed. He never uses it in its unsealed state. In its sealed form, it looks like a regular katana with a circular tsuba. Shūhei has been seen carrying his zanpakutō both at his waist and on his back.
