[edit] Synopsis
Set in Manchester in 1965, the story focusses on twin sisters, Ellie and Arden Brookes, living with their father and grandmother Irma, and working in the family run chip shop. Arden is outgoing and enjoys casual sexual relationships, whereas Ellie is much more conservative. A band called the Ice Cubes move to town and become friendly with the girls. Arden has a relationship with Dallas, the band's guitarist, who also has an affair with Ellie. Arden reveals that she is pregnant and the two plan to marry, although she later admits to faking the pregancy. Ellie, on the otherhand, actually does become pregnant.
Midway through the series the band moves to London after getting a record deal, and the girls, rebelling against their grandmother and their mundane lives, follow them. Rather than tell Dallas that she is pregnant, she confides in, and becomes a close friend of, the Wolf, the band's drummer. Everyone, including Irma who sees a resemblance of her late husband in the Wolf, assumes that he is the father of her baby.
With the help of Ellie's lyric writing abilities, the band have a hit single and become quite famous. When the baby is born Ellie insists that her occupation as songwriter is written on the birth certificate. The Wolf reveals who the real father of the baby is, and the series ends with Ellie and Dallas meeting on a beach and holding the baby in their arms.
