Serviced apartment

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A serviced apartment is a type of furnished, self-contained apartment designed for short-term stays, which provides amenities for daily use.

Serviced apartments can be less expensive than equivalent hotel rooms. Since the beginning of the boom in cheap international travel and the corresponding increase in the level of sophistication of international travellers, interest in serviced apartments has risen at the expense of the use of hotels for short stays.

Since the dot-com crash, company budgets have been squeezed and since when staying in a hotel one is paying for facilities such as restaurants and bars which are often not needed, many companies have switched their accommodation budgets to serviced apartments.

Serviced apartments are fast becoming a superior alternate to extended hotel stays. The reason for this shift is the all round superior value proposition that an apartment holds over hotels, specifically for guests who visit a city for extended stay.

Guests traveling to out of base city for extended period of time (Typically >7 days)can now have the luxury and convenience of a hotel ( housekeeping, laundry, car, shared services) along with privacy, space and comfort (typical hotel room is ~250-300 sq. Ft, while a single bedroom apartment can be ~700 to 900 sqft in size) of home stay by lodging into serviced apartments.

These apartments come with all facilities that are present in home e.g.

1) fully equipped kitchen with microwave, burners, utensils etc

2) Spacious drawing room with Television, DVD, Internet, furniture

3) Comfortable and cosy bed room, with fresh linen and pillows

4) Clean bathrooms sometimes even fitted with steam/jacuzzi

4) Washer/Dryer/ Individual AC units in each room etc.

Not only these, apartments in the luxury category (e.g. Redbrick home also offer services which are otherwise offered only in five star hotels e.g.

1) 24 hour housekeeping support

2) Personal Cook to cater to specific food needs (based on health and taste requirements)

3) Airport pickups

4) Gymnasium/Swimming pool/Game courts etc.

Comparison of prices between a serviced apartment and hotel room for an extended period also proves that the apartments turn out to be cheaper than hotels. e.g a top notch hotel might cost as much as ~400 $/night for a double occupancy, which translates to ~200$/person/night. In comparison, a 3 bed room apartment which allows a six person occupancy at 300$/night, will amount to only 50 $/night/person. Typical tariff for a 1 bed room apartment lies in the range of 100-150 $/night depending upon the city of operation. Such an apartment houses 2 adults in almost

A few caveats in the so story are as follows:

1) Since this is a concept which is still in the growth phase in most parts of the world, hence there is not much loyalty program type benefits

2) Serviced apartments are typically not offered for short duration with some providers restricting the minimum stay to 30 days e.g. Woogo
