Serv-U FTP Server
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Serv-U is an FTP server program with an easy graphical interface that can be run on most versions of Windows. The advantages of this program are that it is very easy to create a FTP server with user groups, passwords, etc. for the novice user (and the advanced user as well) and, on the other hand, that it can be highly customized to use different ports, SSL, and many more options. Serv-U is considered a highly secure FTP server. Security related issues are normally resolved very quickly, often within 24 hours.
[edit] History
Serv-U was originally developed by Rob Beckers during the first half of 1994, as an exercise to learn Windows socket programming, and because the author felt there were at that time no useful Windows FTP server programs available. A user interface was largely missing and did not get added until the winter of 1995-1996. The first version was released on 7 February 1995, as shareware, for US$19.95 per copy.
Sales of Serv-U were initially handled by Rob Beckers, and his small company created for that purpose named Cat Soft LLC, located in Durham, North Carolina. In 1998 sales, marketing, and support were outsourced to Deerfield Inc. During this time the software was marketed as "FTP Serv-U". This lasted until May 2001, when sales, marketing, and support moved to Rhino Software Inc., with the release of version 3.0. At this time the name of the software moved back to "Serv-U" again.
Over the years many improvements were added, such as SSL support, ODBC support for user databases, virtual directories, compression and more. Until January 2005 all code was exclusively written by Rob Beckers. In January 2005 Rhino Software Inc. purchased the rights to Serv-U and now does all code development in addition to marketing, sales, and support. Rob Beckers is no longer involved in Serv-U.
