Sergio Ramos García (born March 30, 1986) more commonly known as Sergio Ramos, is a Spanish international footballer, who usually plays as a defender. A native of Camas, Seville, Ramos is a graduate of the Sevilla FC youth system.
Ramos began his career as a well-regarded right-side defender, a position he was able to keep for the majority of his early career. After two years of experience in La Liga he became known for his ability to play competently in any defensive position. He is also known for his perseverance, powerful shots, crosses, long ball passes and heading ability. Seville received many offers for Ramos, but it was Real Madrid who would eventually sign him.

[edit] Real Madrid
Real Madrid signed Ramos for 27 million Euro in the summer of 2005, making him the second most expensive teenager (behind Wayne Rooney), and the most expensive domestic signing in La Liga. He usually plays at the centre of defence for Real, but has been used as a defensive midfielder in a few occasions. At Real he wears the Number 4 shirt, the same number previously occupied by Fernando Hierro. Ramos scored his first ever Champions League goal for Real Madrid against Olympiakos, a game which Real eventually lost 2-1.
[edit] National team
In 2004 Sergio Ramos became one of the key figures in the Under-21s, playing six international matches and acquiring experience and interest from other clubs. In Salamanca, against China, he played for the senior side at only nineteen years of age, making him the youngest player to play for the national team in the last fifty-five years. He held this record until it was broken by Arsenal's Cesc Fábregas (born 04 May 1987).
He impressed on his debut (March 26, 2005, vs China) and was awarded a place on the team which would challenge Serbia and Montenegro in an important qualification match for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Because of the absence of fellow Madrid player Míchel Salgado he was part of the starting eleven.
Ramos was announced as part of the Spain World Cup Squad on May 15 2006.
[edit] Honours
- UEFA's Best New Player of the National League Championship 2004-05.
[edit] Family Information
Sergio's parents are named Jose María and Paqui. He has an older brother, Rene, who acts as his agent, and a sister, Miriam. According to an interview with El Pais (Oct. '06), Sergio is currently single. He says that his mother is the most important woman in his life, and that his family and friends are what’s most important in his life. Whenever he has the chance, he’s on a train back to Seville to visit his family.
When Sergio was younger, it was his brother Rene who was the football-mad member of the family and who encouraged Sergio to join his first club, FC Camas.
Sergio also has a tiny sized dog, named Odi. Sergio, Rene and Odi appeared on a Spanish animal show called, PELOPICOPATA [1] [2], when the Ramos brothers accompanied Odi to the veterinarian for an x-ray on one of his paws.
Sergio dedicated his goal in Real Madrid's game against Steaua Bucharest (17.10.06) to his brother Rene, who had just learned he was about to be a father.
[edit] Trivia
- He is the ninth Sevilla player who later left for Real Madrid.
- On his nineteenth birthday, a Spanish magazine published nude photos of him. He donated the money from the photos to the victims of the 2006 South Asian Tsunami[3][1] As long as it went to a good cause, Sergio says that, without a doubt, he wouldn’t hesitate to do another nude photo shoot.
- He has numerous tattoos which represent important things in his life. On his right wrist is a band that has sentimental meaning to Sergio and his brother, who also has the same tattoo on his wrist. On his left inner arm is "I will never forget you" written in Elvish, just above another tattoo: "JM VII P." "JM" and "P" stand for his parents' initials, and "VII," or Roman numeral seven, is his lucky number. On his left middle finger are the initials of Sergio, his brother, and his sister: "MSR." Behind his left ear is the Chinese character, "wolf," which bears resemblance to his initials, "SR". On his upper back is a cartoon of a ghoul, who is grinning malevolently, with a football. He recently got two new tattoos: on his right bicep, in English: "The spirit of those dead"; on his left bicep, also in English: Lies in the memory of those alive". It also contains the dates 9-11 and 3-11, the dates of the terrorist attacks on New York and Madrid. [4]
- He says he will never cut his hair as it's his favourite quality.
- He doesn't believe in sex before a game.
- He likes bullfighting and once dreamed of being a bullfighter.[5]
- He is called 'gitano' or 'gypsy' by his team mates because of his love for flamenco music.
- Sergio scored his first El Clásico goal on March 10th, 2007, at Barcelona's Camp Nou in what would be a 3-3 draw.
