Sergei Molotov

Sergei Molotov is a character in the computer strategy game Empire Earth. He is a character in the Russian Campaign, and plays a key role in the plot. His first name is not actually given in the story, but is given in the 'Random Map' feature, where he is a possible choice of leader for a civilisation.

The date of Molotov's birth is unknown.
When he is first seen, Molotov is a young lieutenant in Novaya Russia, 2064, who has discovered that one General Yukov, upset by the decision of Novaya Russia's leader Grigor Stoyanovich to appoint his robotic bodyguard Grigor II as his heir, has launched a coup against his leader. Molotov quickly warns Grigor of this bold move against him, and Grigor is able to mobilize support from many of the paramilitary Black Robe troops in Moscow. Grigor shuts down the coup, killing the rebel officers. Unfortunately Grigor dies of a heart attack shortly afterwards, leaving Grigor II leader of Novaya Russia. Molotov's loyality is rewarded and he has been promoted to the rank of Major by the time Grigor II launches the next phase of his predecessor's plans for world domination, the invasion of China.

When the invasion of China stalls, Grigor II launches a daring raid into China to capture the cyber factories that are producing the machines that have been keeping the Black Robes from victory. Major Molotov accompanies him. They are successful, but they discover that the Chinese have been creating a Time machine in a desperate attempt to turn the tide of the war. Grigor II dispatches Molotov to shut the time machine down before it can be powered up and activated. He successfully infiltrates the facility and blows it up, but takes a lethal dose of radiation. When he wakes up, he discovers that the conquest of China has been completed, but half of his body, to his horror, has been replaced by mechanical parts. Grigor II's attempts to console Molotov with the knowledge that now he is more like him is of little condolence.

Molotov continued to serve Grigor II, but his near death experience in China had disillusioned him of his glorious vision of Novaya Russia's conquest of the world and left him sick of war. Yet, he was still loyal to his country and, as the commanding General, led the final phase of Grigor II's plans for world domination, the conquest of the United States of America. Landing on the island of Hispanola, Molotov established a base, and proceeded to conquer Cuba to allow for a landing in Florida. However, Grigor II had made the decision that the civilian population of Cuba could not be contained by Molotov's forces and ordered Molotov to kill them all. Molotov refused his orders, and turned against Grigor II and Novaya Russia, defecting to an American agent in Florida Molly Ryan. He gave her the plans of the Chinese time machine, feeling that the only way to save the world from the atrocities Grigor II had committed would be to go back in time to warn the original Grigor Stoyanovich of what would happen to his dream when he was gone.
The Americans, with Molotov's help, invaded Cuba to establish a beachhead where they could build this time machine for maximum effect. When it was built and had powered up, both Molotov and Ryan went back into the past, the year 2018. The time machine was soon captured by the enemy, and Grigor II, with many of his advanced troops, also went back into the past.

When Molotov and Ryan arrive, they discover that Grigor has escaped from his safehouse in Voronezh and is on his way to Volgograd, his power base from where he launched his revolution that overthrew the old order. While rushing in a final attempt to reach him at the gates of the city, they are greeted by the sight of a Titan Bomber from the future destroying the gate, making clear that Grigor II has captured the time machine. Later, Grigor II directly contacts Molotov, telling him that he has fortified Volograd with technology from the future in preparation for Grigor's arrival, and thanking Molotov for giving him the opportunity to accelerate his predecessor's conquest of the world. Then, he deploys troops to destroy Voronezh and kill Molotov and Ryan. Acting quickly, the two secure an alliance with Ukraine and send spies into Volgograd and other towns in Grigor's control to capture his advanced technology. They repel Grigor's attacks, then attack Volgograd, killing Grigor II and wiping out his advanced forces.
Molotov then goes to Grigor's bunker, hoping to reason with him. Unfortunately Grigor II has spoken to Grigor before, telling him that Molotov was a miserable traitor, and leaving Grigor convinced that the way things occurred was the way things ought to be. "So what if the short-sighted people of your generation curse my name, so long as they are my slaves?" Grigor comments.
Seeing that debate is futile, Molotov kills Grigor's aides, and Grigor, after that being pulled back into the future, asking one final question:
"I can feel the tug of the time vortex...pulling...me...back. But what future will I return to? One that is better, or worse?"
It should also be noted that Molotov need not be the one to talk to Grigor. If he is killed in battle, it is still possible for Molly Ryan to go to the bunker and talk to Grigor, but she will be no more successful than Molotov in debate with Grigor.
