Serg Vorbarra

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Serg Vorbarra is a minor character in Lois McMaster Bujold's sci-fi series the Vorkosigan Saga.

Serg Vorbarra was the Crown Prince of the Barrayaran Imperium, as his father was the reigning Emperor and he was the oldest son.

The late Crown Prince Serg Vorbarra died at the Escobar War during the novel Shards of Honor. His father, Emperor Ezar Vorbarra survived him long, as did his son Prince Gregor Vorbarra, and his wife Princess Kareen Vorbarra. As a result of his death and Ezar's poor health, Admiral Lord Aral Vorkosigan became Regent of Barrayar for the duration of Prince Gregor's minority after Ezar died.

[edit] Why he died

Crown Prince Serg was a sick and twisted individual. Admiral Ges Vorrutyer became one of his close personal friends, and taught Serg all he knew. Over time Serg became worse than his teacher Ges. Vorrutyer was known for raping prisoners of war, and torturing them for his arousal, and apparently Serg was much worse. Because of this, Ezar Vorbarra, Emperor of Barrayar could not stand by and let his twisted son inherit the Imperium. Ezar remembered all too well the perils of Mad Emperor Yuri, whom he succeeded by force. Thus, Ezar invaded Escobar as a ruse to get Serg and Vorrutyer killed. His plan was known only to Aral Vorkosigan and ImpSec Chief Captain Negri. Eventually, Cordelia Naismith figured it out. She actually fled her native Beta Colony to avoid being forcibly debriefed of this information so as to avoid public scandal and basically the collapse of the Barrayaran Imperium.
