Serdar Ortaç is one of the leading singers in the Turkish popular music movement which started in 1990s.

He was born in Istanbul in 16th February 1970. He Started his primary school education in Kocamustafapasa Ilkokul and finished secondary school education in Suadiye Lisesi. After graduating from Haydarpasa Technical High School, he started studying American Language & Literature branch at Bilkent University; however wasn't able to complete it.

Ortaç was a famous radio DJ and he was working at a radio station when he composed his hit song Karabiberim. He shared a simple version of Karabiberim with his listeners during an ordinary radio broadcast. Then the song became a major hit and also made Ortaç a superstar.

His first album was the best selling album of the year by 2 million copies. His album, Çakra was the best selling album of 2004 as well.

He composes most of the songs in his albums. He composed more than 150 songs.

His songs can be seen in other singers' albums like Sibel Can, Hülya Avşar, Muazzez Abacı, Alisan, Ebru Gündeş and Gülben Ergen. His songs have been released in many languages like Arabic, Greek, Russian and Armenian.

He was the host of a TV Program for 3 years named "Alltogether With Serdar Ortac" which had been chosen as the best Show program of 2003 by Turkish Radio & TV Oscars.

He also released a book on January 2005 named "Bu Sarkilar Kimin İçin?" (Who are these songs for) which contains his poems, memories and some lyrics. His book had high sales as well.

After his early career life in 1998-2000s as he said he came up with difficulties in casinos. In a TV show in Turkey he says he lost about three-four million US dollars. But thank God he's not gambling at all since 2000.

Ortaç has enjoyed a large fan base and high album sales for more than 10 years.Although Ortac has a large fan base but he also has many people who dislike him. His fans say "You love or hate him, you can't simply like him". Though you can't find anyone in Turkey who doesn't like Serdar Ortac's songs and doesn't know at least five of his songs.

The media have always been denying Ortac's success. They never wanted to accept that he is a star some don't even call him an artist. But the records and his successful career shows that he's really a star and one of the biggest artists in Turkey.

The thing that makes him so special among his rivals is that he never got support from big artists as others had from Sezen Aksu, Nazan Oncel and other famous singer-songwriters.

His latest album Mesafe was released in 2006. The album contains hits like Dansöz(The Belly Dancer), Mesafe(Distance), Gitme(Don't go) and Sor(Ask).

Serdar have always been successful because of his hit songs like "Karabiberim", "Ben Adam Olmam", "Yaz Gunu", "Asrin Hatasi", "Kabahat", "Beni Unut" & "Dansoz". But people loves him so much because of his slow songs like "Yaz Yagmuru", "Mutsuzsun", "Bilsemki", "Kararsin Dunyam", "Ismi Lazim Degil" & "Mesafe".
