Spider-Man & Venom: Separation Anxiety was a standard side-scrolling beat 'em up video game and sequel of Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage, released for Sega Mega Drive and Super NES and then ported to PC, in which one or two players could team up as Spider-Man and Venom to defeat the evil symbiote Carnage. The game boasts a large number of thugs to punch, kick, and web your way through, heavily armed Jury and Venom's symbiote children bosses, supposedly named Scream, Phage, Riot, Lasher, and Agony.

There is also cameo assistance from Captain America, Ghost Rider, Hawkeye, and Daredevil.

The game was met with less critical response by the gaming community, especially when compared to its predecessor.

Of particular note is that the title is misleading--the plot of the comic book series Venom:Separation Anxiety involves Venom's five symbiote spawn attempting to force Eddie (without his symbiote) to help them communicate with their own symbiotes. The events of the game more closely follow the events of Venom's first limited series, Venom:Lethal Protector.

[edit] Story

The mysterious Life Foundation captured the lethal protector called Venom, and removed five symbiotes from him. But before these new symbiotes could destroy their 'parent', Venom escaped. Now he is forced to seek out his old foe Spider-Man, and forge an uneasy alliance with the wall-crawler to stop these symbiotes and cure his... Separation Anxiety. (Taken from game documentation).

[edit] Characters

  • Spider-Man--Our hero, Spider-Man needs no introduction. Bitten by a radioactive spider, Peter Parker gained the proportionate speed, strength, and agility of a spider. Dedicating his life to the credo "With great power comes great responsibility", Peter Parker fights evil wherever it may appear.

"Web-swinging high above the streets of Manhattan, Spider-Man saw the unlikely sight of his arch-foe, Venom unconscious in an alley. While recovering, Venom tells the wall-crawler of his escape from the life foundation, and the removal of five symbiotes. The foundation planned to bond the symbiotes with their soldiers, creating a small but unstoppable army. Spider-Man, recalling the menace of the first Venom spawn, Carnage, realizes that the symbiotes must be stopped at all costs-even if it means proceeding with the help of the injured Venom!" (From game documentation).

  • Venom--Fighting the Secret Wars, Spider-Man came across what he believed to be an alien costume, but what was actually a sentient symbiote. After Spider-Man rejected the alien, it bonded to reporter Eddie Brock, and the lethal anti-hero Venom was created! Stronger, faster, and more agile than Spider-Man, his alien ability to camouflage himself or assume the likeness of almost anyone, and his ability to generate webbing rather than relying on mechanical web-shooters make him a deadly foe, but what makes him truly terrifying is his complete invisibility to Peter's spider-sense!

"Recovering from his wounds, Venom realizes he must destroy his new 'children' for if the symbiotes should bind with the wrong person, as in the case of crazed criminal Cletus Kasady's transformation into Carnage, the danger will be incalculable. Only with the aid of the Amazing Spider-Man does Venom stand a chance of defeating this incredible menace." (From game documentation).

  • The Jury--In order to capture Venom, and then to protect their operations while removing the symbiotes, the Life Foundation hired The Jury, a group of five heavily armed, well-trained criminal mercenaries. Willing and able to undertake nearly any criminal activity as long as they are well paid, The Jury fight solely for profit. And two dead wall-crawlers means twice as big a payoff!
  • Symbiotes--Removed from Venom by the Life Foundation and implanted into their best soldiers, these five alien life-forms resemble Carnage more than they do Venom. They are tough, deadly, and absolutely insane. Using them, the Life Foundation plans to rule the world. Their first opponent will be their 'parent', Venom, but they wouldn't mind taking down Uncle Spidey as well!
  • Carnage-- the First Venom's son is back! Altrough he hasn't role in the story, he appears as the Final boss.

The game's plot loosely follows Lethal Protector in the following ways: Appearance of Spider-Man (in LP#1.) Confronting the digger in San Fransisco (as seen in LP#1.) Note: The Jury of the comics is a group of five former Vault members who are only interested in revenge killing Venom, and are not affiliated with the Life Foundation, at least not until "Spider-Man: The Arachnis Project" limited series, where they DO work for the Foundation.) Removal of five symbiote seeds to create five new symbiotes (as seen in LP#4.) Spider-Man and Venom's escape from the Life Foundation (as seen in LP#4.)
