Sepanggar
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sepanggar, or Sepanggar Bay, is a port and a sub-district of Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia. It is located around the Teluk Sepanggar (Sepanggar Bay) area which houses a major naval base for the Royal Malaysian Navy as well as the Sepanggar Bay Oil Terminal. The main campus for Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), and Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP), are situated here. Sepanggar is also a parliamentary constituency (P.171) and is currently represented by Enchin bin Majimbun of Barisan Nasional. The constituency is further divided into two state legislative assembly districts of Karambunai (N.12) and Inanam (N.13).
[edit] Features and Development
Sepanggar is currently experiencing a surge in development due to the expansion of Kota Kinabalu. The ongoing project to build the Sepanggar Container Port Terminal is due to be completed in 2008. This project was created to complement and help ease the congestion currently experienced at Kota Kinabalu Port.[1] Besides this, various completed and non-completed projects for residential and commercial purposes have sprouted around Sepanggar; in line with the government's plan to turn Sepanggar into another urban center or suburb of Kota Kinabalu.[2] The construction of the largest shopping mall in East Malaysia, and possibly in the whole of Borneo, along Jalan Sulaman, 1 Borneo [1], is currently underway and is expected to be completed by 2008. The Royal Malaysian Navy is also currently constructing a submarine base here, which is to become the Navy's first and principal base throughout Malaysia.
