Seoul Buses

Seoul Buses are public transit buses operated by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

[edit] Type of buses
There are three type of buses:
- Red Bus or Rapid Bus - service for downtown and satellite cities with route # R9XXX (ex.9306,9713...)
- Blue Bus or Trunk Bus - runs from downtown Seoul to satellite cities with route # BXXX (ex.100,303,361,640,...)
- Green Bus or Branch Bus - connections between residential areas and the subway lines with route # GXXXX (ex.2412,3423,강동 03,동대문 01...)
- Yellow Bus or Circulation Bus - service for downtown areas with route # YXX (ex.02,51,52)
Route number examples: R9713 means the rapid bus which starts from area 7. B462 means the trunk bus which starts from area 4 and ends at area 6. G3423 means the branch bus which starts in area 3 and ends in area 4. 서초10 means the town bus which circulate inside Seocho-gu. Y02 means the bus which circulate inside area 0.

With improvement of public transportation system, Seoul introduce new bus numbering system. Area number is one of it. It makes people easy to recognize its route outline.
- area 0 : Jongno-gu, Jung-gu, Yongsan-gu
- area 1 : Dobong-gu, Gangbuk-gu, Seongbuk-gu, Nowon-gu. (also Uijeongbu, Yangju)
- area 2 : Dongdaemun-gu, Jungnang-gu, Seongdong-gu, Gwangjin-gu. (also Guri, Namyangju)
- area 3 : Gangdong-gu, Songpa-gu. (also Hanam, Gwangju(Gyeongi Province))
- area 4 : Seocho-gu, Gangnam-gu. (also Seongnam, Yongin)
- area 5 : Dongjak-gu, Gwanak-gu, Geumcheon-gu. (also Anyang, Gwacheon, Uiwang, Ansan, Gunpo, Suwon)
- area 6 : Gangseo-gu, Yangcheon-gu, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Guro-gu. (also Incheon, Bucheon, Gwangmyeong, Gimpo, Siheung)
- area 7 : Eunpyeong-gu, Mapo-gu, Seodaemun-gu. (also Goyang, Paju)

The buses use a bus management system that allows users to check for arrival times via internet, ARS, WINC(Wireless Internet Numbers for Contents), PDA, etc. Bus management system does not have any foreign language service at this time.

The system uses cash or Transportation Card. Rates vary depending on which route is taken. Below table shows basic fare for each type of bus.

These are basic fare for first 10km. 100 won will be added for next 5 km. Bus-Bus and Bus-Metro transfer will be free of charge except added distance fare. Only transportation card holder gets free transferring.

Most buses in South Korea are domestic models and made by two manufacturers. Buses use either diesel or compressed natural gas.

- Daewoo Bus BS090 (Diesel/CNG) - For Branch, Circulation buses.
- Daewoo Bus BS106 (Diesel/CNG) - For Trunk, Branch buses.
- Daewoo Bus BS106L (Diesel) - For Trunk, Branch buses.
- Daewoo Bus BS116 (CNG) - For Rapid, Trunk buses.
- Hyundai Super Aero City (Diesel) - with 21, 38 or 45 seats. For Rapid, Trunk, Branch buses.
- Hyundai New Super Aero City (Diesel/CNG) - For Trunk, Branch buses.
- Hyundai New Super Aero City Non-step Low Rider (CNG) - For Trunk, Branch buses.
- Hyundai Chorus, e-Aerotown, Global 900 (Diesel) - For Branch buses.
- Kia Motors/Asia Motors Cosmos, New Cosmos (Diesel) - For Branch buses.
- Articulated bus from Iveco Irisbus - For Trunk buses.
