Sentara is one of the largest employers in the Hampton Roads area employing more than 17,000 people and expanding every day. Locals often joke that there are only two employers to work for in Hampton Roads, the military and Sentara.

In addition to offering hospital services, Sentara also manages eight-seven other care-giving sites. These sites include four (soon to be five with the completion of the construction of the Sentara Princess Anne Health Campus) outpatient care facilities, eighteen physical rehabilitation centers (and is associated with four others), two fitness centers, three schools, an Adult Day Health Care Center, several assisted living facilities, long term nursing care facilities, urgent care centers, and dozens of physician practices.

Sentara is a major competitor to Riverside Health System.

[edit] Sentara History

Unofficially, Sentara dates itself back to 1888 with the founding of the 25 bed Retreat for the Sick. The hospital was moved in 1896 and its capacity expanded to 100 beds, just a short two years later, the Retreat for the Sick was renamed Norfolk Protestant Hospital. In 1904 a new facility was built and then renamed to reflect a non-sectarian mission in 1936 to Norfolk General Hospital. Officially, Sentara dates back to 1972 and the merger of two Norfolk, VA hospitals, Norfolk General Hospital and Leigh Hospital. It was through this merger that the Sentara family of hospitals was formed and would eventually become linked and integrated.
