Selwyn Jazz
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Selwyn Jazz is a not-for-profit big band that draws its musicians mostly from the student population of the University of Cambridge (not just Selwyn College). The band plays during University Term time at a wide range of events, including jazz evenings in college bars, formal dinners, college bops, May balls and garden parties. The band's repertoire is varied, ranging from traditional swing to funk, Latin and rock 'n' roll.

[edit] History
The band was formed in 1993 by Olly Wedgwood and Jon Hooper. They were members of Selwyn College, Cambridge, from which the band derives its name. The band was formed with the intention of performing at charity events, only drawing enough money from events to fund the purchase of new music and supplies to keep the band running.
In March 2006 the band's aims were formalised by the agreement of an official constitution that covers the administration of the band. This change was initiated by Jon Matthews, then leader, and has allowed the band to become registered with the University's Societies Syndicate.
