Selston
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Selston is a hilltop village in West Nottinghamshire. The parish church of St. Helens dates back to 1150 AD, but has possibly been a place of worship for much longer. An older Saxon church is thought to have occupied the site, and there is a monolith in the church yard, which may have been of ceremonial importance for pre-Christian pagans.
Selston is bounded by Underwood to the South, Annesley to the East, and the Derbyshire border to the West.
The village is part of Nottinghamshire's Hidden Valleys area.
The local 5-a-side football pitch, on-site of the Leisure Centre was opened by Nottingham Forest football legends, Stuart Pearce and Colin Cooper.
Since the year 2000, Selston has been victim to the swarming in of Uniform Housing Estates, predicated by companies such as Barrett. These homes, built on former green land or Village Landmarks [The last trace of the Holland Family, responsibly for the building of Matthew Holland School in the Selston, was removed when David Holland, Great Grandson of Matthew, sold his green grocers' and it was demolished in 2005] have been a massive failure, having not attracted enough people to fill them. Several of the estates, therefore, have been left unfinished, leaving Selston to look like a building site rather than a hilltop village.
Recently the Matthew Holland School, having received an arts grant, changed its name to the Selston Arts and Community College, despite the fact that it is a comprehensive school and not a college and a sense of community has not existed in Selston for almost a decade.
