Selimiye Mosque was originally constructed during 1209 AD and 1228 AD as the St. Sophia Cathedral. The Kings of Cyprus were crowned here until the Venetians took control of the island in 1489. This ancient building is the chief mosque in the northern de facto state of Cyprus.
