Self-review framework

The Self-review framework is a free, online tool that schools in the United Kingdom can use to assess and benchmark their use of ICT across all their activities.[1]

It enables schools to identify where they are and shows the practical steps they can take to gain even greater benefit from their use of ICT.

In many areas, it complements the work schools currently undertake for Ofsted and can be provided as evidence for a school’s Self Evaluation Framework (SEF).

The self-review framework has the following eight elements - these cover the development of ICT across the whole school.

When completed, this process gives a summary of the school’s current ICT capabilities and provides actions to progress further in their use of ICT.[2]

The self-review framework is the result of collaboration between Becta, Ofsted, the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA), the Training and Development Agency (TDA), the National College fo School Leadership (NCSL), the National Strategies, the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT) and Naace, alongside advice and guidance from a wider range of partners and stakeholders.

This element has been created in partnership with the National College for School Leadership. It supports and challenges schools to:

  • develop and communicate a shared vision for ICT
  • plan a sustainable, ICT strategy across the whole school including:
- manage, co-ordinate, monitor and review the implementation of their ICT strategy
- promote the effective use of ICT by improving organisational effectiveness and efficiency

This element has been created in partnership with the National Strategies. It supports and challenges schools in:

  • planning and leading a broad and balanced ICT curriculum to enable pupils to apply and develop their ICT capability across all subjects
  • reviewing and updating the whole curriculum in the light of developments in technology and professional practice
  • ensuring pupil’s ICT experiences are coherent, balanced and consistent across year groups and progressive over time

This element has been created by Becta. It supports and challenges schools to:

  • ensure effective teaching through informed planning resulting in quality use of ICT including developing digital literacy
  • meet pupils’ expectations for the use of ICT
  • encourage teachers to work collaboratively in identifying and evaluating the impact of ICT on learning and teaching

This element has been created in partnership with the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. It supports and challenges schools in:

  • the assessment of ICT capability to support pupils’ learning
  • how assessment evidence and data are used in planning learning and teaching across the whole curriculum
  • assessing the learning in specific subjects when ICT has been used

This element has been created in partnership with the Training and Development Agency for Schools. It supports and challenges schools in:

  • identifying and addressing the ICT training needs of the school and individual staff
  • providing quality support and training activities for all staff in the use of ICT
  • sharing effective practice
  • reviewing, monitoring and evaluating professional development as an integral part of the development of the school

This element has been created by Becta. It supports and challenges schools in:

  • understanding the needs of pupils and the community in their extended use of ICT
  • ensuring provision is enhanced through informed planning resulting in quality of use of ICT within and beyond the school
  • reviewing, monitoring and evaluating opportunities to extend learning within and beyond the school

This element has been created by Becta. It supports and challenges schools in:

  • ensuring learning and teaching environments where ICT can be used effectively and in line with strategic needs
  • purchasing, deploying and reviewing appropriate ICT resources that reflect the school improvement strategy
  • managing technical support effectively for the benefit of pupils and staff

This element has been created in partnership to Ofsted. It supports and challenges schools by:

  • demonstrating how pupils can make good progress in ICT capability
  • being aware of how the use of ICT can have a positive impact on pupils’ progress more widely
  • reviewing pupil attitudes and behaviour and how the use of ICT can impact positively on pupil achievement

To sign your school up to Becta’s self-review framework, simply log on to www.mirror-mirror.info where the following information will be asked for:

  • name and postcode of your school
  • the name of your local authority
  • a contact name and e-mail address

[edit] ICT Mark

The ICT Mark is a nationally-recognised quality accreditation schools can achieve once they have completed the self-review framework. The ICT Mark demonstrates excellence in all areas of ICT use across the school curriculum and management.
