Self-powered equipment, such as radios and flashlights that contain generators or an induction system, is used when natural disaster, war or civil disturbance occurs and regular power supplies are unavailable.

Some of this equipment contains a power unit, similar to a cordless telephone's battery charged by an independent generator. Others, such as hand-cranked flashlights, use a clockwork mechanism to run a generator in the equipment itself.
