Sekolah Menengah Sains Sultan Mohamad Jiwa

Originally named Sekolah Menengah Sains Kedah, Sungai Petani, Kedah was established in 1973, but the infrastructure was only ready in January 1974. Prior to the completion of the building infrastructure, the first intakes were of pupils from the states of Kedah and Perak for Form 1 classes. These were housed temporarily at several schools. In Sungai Petani, they resided and attended classes at the Sekolah Menengah Khir Johari. In Ipoh, Perak, the male pupils attended Anderson School but resided at the Sekolah Menengah Teknik. Whereas the female pupils attended classes at the Sekolah Menengah Konvent and resided at the Sekolah Menengah Raja Chulan. Therefore, the very first batch of that actually joined the Sekolah Menegah Sains Kedah Proper were Form 1, Form 2 (those mentioned above) and Form 4 pupils. The first principal was Datuk Seri Dr. Abdul Shukor Abdullah (who later became the Director-General of Education Malaysia).
