Seithenyn is a figure from Welsh legend, apparently contemporary with King Gwyddno Garanhir. He supposedly was responsible for the sea-defences of Gwyddno’s Kingdom of Ceredigion but neglected them because of his drunkenness. Because of this neglect, the sea overran a portion of Ceredigion known as the Cantref of Gwaelod.

The Cantref of Gwaelod is the name of a shallow reef reaching up to 11km to seaward off the coast of Ceredigion near Aberdyfi.

The legend arguably is more spiritually symbolic than historically factual. Seithenyn’s full name, Seithenyn ap Seithyn Saidi, means “to kindle the seven, son of the Holy Seventh”. Seven was a sacred number to the Druids, possibly in allusion to the seven chakras in the human body[citation needed].
