Sefton High School is a partially selective high school in Sefton, Sydney, Australia. It is a full day, co-educational secondary school, and is a public school operated by the New South Wales Department of Education and Training. Sefton High School is considered one of the best partially selective schools in New South Wales, and consistently receives the highest HSC result among partially selective schools.
The school is particularly strong in Mathematics, where it consistently excels above many full selective schools. Generally, about half of the school's band 6 or band E4 results come from the subject of Mathematics. However, the school's results in English fall well below many non-selective government schools[citation needed]. This gap between the results of Mathematics and the results from the rest of the available HSC courses has caused some concern about the competence of teachers and effectiveness of teaching programs for the HSC course, particularly in the area of English. The partially selective school was ranked 110th in the state of NSW in 2006 for English (well below 50+ non-selective government high schools) and there was actually "value substraction" between the English-literacy School Certificate and 2 unit English Higher School Certificate results[citation needed].
In the lower four grades (Years 7 through 10), approximately half of the students are selected by a competitive entrance examination ("selective" classes), while the other half are accepted by virtue of local residency ("community" classes). However, in Years 11 and 12 the two streams are not differentiated.

[edit] Campus
Sefton High School is located in Sefton, a suburb in the south-west of Sydney. The school grounds cover almost an entire block along Hector Street. The main building is a U-shaped, two-storey building surrounding a rectangular playground. In addition, there is an hall/gymnasium, an industrial arts building, as well as an administration building and a newly constructed library.
In addition to the gymnasium, sports facilities include outdoor basketball courts, a football field, netball courts, volleyball courts and various smaller playing areas. The back oval has been recently rejuvinated, with the grounds being smoothed out and brand new grass being laid, all up, costing about $100K. New handball court lines, including an 8 square court, have also been painted on the new bitumen which was laid during the 2005/2006 School holidays.
