[edit] Election results

This seat will be fought for the first time at the 54th United Kingdom general election, which must be held by 2010, although is more likely to be held in 2009. The new constituency appears to favour the Conservatives, with four of the the seven wards currently controlled by the Conservatives; (Blundellsands, Harington, Manor, Ravenmeols), followed by the Liberal Democrats who control three; (Molyneux, Park, Sudell). Share of the vote based on the 2006 local election in these seven wards is: Conservative 42.7% Liberal Democrat 33.6% Labour 23.7%. However local election results do not always have a direct bearing on general election results.

Analysis by Colin Rallings and Michael Thrasher indicates that had the Sefton Central constituency existed in 2005, the result would have been: Labour 45.6%, Conservative 33.6%, LibDem 19.2%, a Labour majority of 4,950.
