[edit] Bob Dylan and Gordon Lightfoot

Regarding List of people compared to Bob Dylan, I was thinking of people called The Bob Dylan of XXX when I made the page, but by all means add Lightfoot if a comparison can be sourced. Tuf-Kat 21:46, Jan 12, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Tom Brown, Jr.

Thanks for the compliment. Though I did a lot of researching and work on the page, I actually didn't write the text. User talk:193.122.239.149 did, whoever that is. Last year, I wrote an article and sent it to Joe Lau at Tom's school. I didn't want to post it to Wikipedia until I got approval, since Tom is not some dead, historical figure (plus I asked for permission to use a picture). Before I heard back from Joe, 193.122.239.149 posted a plain-text article on Tom. Seeing that, I left the text alone and just spruced the entry up a bit. So I look forward to whatever you might add. Thanks for noticing. PS How are you familiar with Tom? User:Lensim 18:09, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] RfC on Monicasdude

Started at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Monicasdude. Please help certify it and flesh it out.

Hello, SEC. I was wondering why you haven't signed the Mdude RfC as an endorser of Lulu's and my descriptions. No prob if you just don't want to, but in case it's just an oversight I thought I'd bring it up here. I'm making a proposal on the RfC Talk page that will involve a sort of sanctioned "team" of editors who will act in concert after the unprotecting of the main Dylan page. This team will consist of certifiers and endorsers-of-the-RfC. The more we have, the better. Given your expressed views on the dispute, I would think you'd want to be part of this. [edit] Info request

Hello SEC, would you mind pointing me toward a policy or other document in which it states Fair Use material must have a publically disclosed source? Thx. JDG 05:45, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

I figured JDG must have accidentally deleted the words on his Talk page, since he was clearly asking for information. User:Zoe|(talk) 23:51, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Application of the term "idiotic"

Typically my personal policy is to either

  • name names: "X did this, and here's all the positive aspects of what (s)he did", or
  • Say something was stupid, (but not mention names): "Solution Y is utterly idiotic"

That way, the dignity of the vict^W person in question remains intact... at least partially. :-)

Hmm, I guess that does break down a bit on wikipedia, where the means to connect solution Y to person X are readily available. On the other hand, such means are often also available IRL, so the policy is only slightly stronger than ROT13 (at obfuscatation) in the first place.

I'll grant that that may take some rethinking then.

Kim Bruning 06:32, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

Hmmm, you actually connected X and Y for me. Now why'd you go and do a thing like that? :-) Kim Bruning 06:54, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WP:IAR

I personally thought the repetition went right to the spirit of IAR... "if you want to improve the wiki, then improve the wiki!" Of course I'm not that great with wording, I kinda figured it might sound bad to other people. So uh... I have no real ideas on improving it, sorry. I wouldn't really mind much if I got reverted :-) --W.marsh 22:13, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Cut-and-paste page-moves

Please don't move pages by cutting and pasting, as you did at careless Love; it messes up the page histories. The way to rename/move a page is by using the "move" function (the tab to click on is between "History" and "Watch/Unwatch" at the top of the page). See Wikipedia:Page moves. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 10:03, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Warning vandals

To warn a vandal about their vandalism, simply insert {{testn}} where n is a number between 1 and 4. Bart133 00:37, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

  1. Note that all such templates should be "subst"ed (e.g., {{subst:test}}).
  2. The first level doesn't have a number (it's just "test", not "test1").
  3. Most levels have variants depending upon what kind of vandalism is involved. For details, see Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 13:44, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] What's your opinion?

To try and eliminate link spamming on the Bob Dylan article...what if it included: list of authorized links from bobdylan.com ? I've seen this done, with some success, on a few other music related articles where an "authorized artist list" has been substituted for an overpowering spam list. Beyond the bounds of WP:EL...basically...if you're not notable enough for the artist...then you're not notable enough for Wikipedia. Just wanted to know what you thought about that. Good day! Fair Deal 22:41, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

The Bob page just recently joined my watchlist, that's why I noticed the activity. If you check my own edit history...I'm very hard on linkspam...which the music articles are saturated with. I try to avoid edit wars so I usually try to note what the regular article editors lean towards when it comes to X-links. Like you said...some are very notable and WP:EL allows for links of high quality and detailed content. I just noticed how some articles like Deep Purple and Genesis used authorized link lists from the artists websites and it seemed to cut down on the spam sites being added in. It's also worth noting how User:Dharmabum420( a regular editor of the Pink Floyd article...basically the one who got it to FA status) eliminated the edit wars on that page by adding a link to Another Link on the Wall, which bascially has all the notable Pink Floyd links. Seems to work on that article quite well. Whatever you do with Bob will be well done, I'm sure. As I browse about I will check in to see that any work you do...does not get "undone". Good luck with it! Fair Deal 00:34, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Garbage Man/Garbage Truck moves

When you moved these pages, you didnt really do much of a thorough job. You left double and single redirects all over the place. Also, in an edit summary, you said "Garbage truck is a US American terminology where as dust cart is British English. Waste collection vehicle is the standard across both". In fact, waste collection vehicle is the standard across neither. It would be better to have it named as one and have the other version redirect, rather than move it to a mutually inconvenient location. I haven't fixed anything, just letting you know - when you move pages, you should do all the work, not a half job. SECProto 14:37, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Quite to the contrary, if you were to check your facts in the waste management industry the correct terminology for a dust cart or a garbage truck is a waste collection vehicle (WCV). Waste collection vehicle is neutral and fits into the category of WASTE MANAGEMENT (not garbage management or rubbish management)--Alex 14:53, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Coastal towns category

The reason we've been keeping the "Coastal towns in Canada" category from being applied to communities in the Maritimes and Quebec is because the entire "Coastal towns" and "Coastal cities" categories are being applied incorrectly - they permit communities on lakes, such as the Great Lakes, to be included, when they are absolutely not "coastal" - see the definition of the term coast for more info. Only communities on an ocean should have the term "coastal" applied, so until communities on the Great Lakes get removed, we're trying to keep the category from being applied in the Maritimes and Quebec. Some editors have applied it to many communities in Nfld. & Lab. so that might require administrator intervention at some point. ThanksPlasma east 16:19, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
