Secwepemc
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Secwepemc [ʃəxwέpməx] or [səxwέpməx] also commonly known as the Shuswap, are a First Nation residing in the Canadian province of British Columbia, primarily in the area north and east of Kamloops. The Secwepemc are perhaps the most numerous of the Interior Salish peoples of British Columbia.
Their traditional language is Shuswap, known as [ʃəxwəpməxtʃín] or Secwepemctsín, but it is currently spoken by no more than 500 people, mostly elderly.
Secwepemctsín is being revitalized by the efforts of organizations such as Chief Atahm School, which offers an immersion program for babies through grade nine.
